The Markworks
The Markworks is part workspace, part aesthetic expression, part mechanical fetishism and entirely a continuously evolving lifelong project. Each piece of equipment is a carefully selected example of the some of the finest metalworking machinery ever made, chosen for accuracy, durability, and capabilities we are not likely to outgrow. Our machines will undergo a gradual process of restoration, optimization, and customization over the life of the shop.
Frank
- Bridgeport Milling Machine
- 2000lb, 1hp
- 9"x42" table
- 8 spindle speeds
Named in memory of its original owner, their late grandfather R. F. Krystinik, this mill is the machine on which the Markwardt brothers got their start. This basic design of machine has been imitated and copied the world over, but nothing beats the original. Although far from the largest machine in the shop, this machine is highly adaptable to a very wide array of operations and capable of holding tolerances of less than 0.001".
Annie
- 26” Oakley Disc/Spindle Sander
- 5hp, 2000 lbs
- Year of manufacture: 1960
This was the first piece of heavy machinery acquired by the Markwardt brothers. The large disc and high power motor permit massive material removal rates. Future plans include the addition of tooling and movable axes to the table for accurate roughing operations of all kinds of parts and materials.
Ilia
- Axelson Model 20W Engine Lathe
- 20” swing, 54” centers
- 10hp, 8000lbs
- Year of manufacture: 1952
Held as one of the finest American made engine lathes of its era, Axelson machines are known for their high power and extremely solid construction. This lathe features an all-gear drive train, taper attachment, and 2-speed tailstock. In its slowest speed, the available torque at the chuck is approximately 5000 ft-lb.
Boris the Blade
- DoAll Model 2613-3 Bandsaw
- 26” Throat with 13” height
- 7.5hp, 4500lbs
- Year of manufacture: 1975
Not your average band saw, this example is the top of the DoAll range, featuring hydraulic table power feed with up to 600lbs of force and a host of other hydraulically powered options. A three speed continuously variable powertrain gives a maximum blade speed of 10,000ft/min, enabling friction sawing of hardened steel.
